Nerja Donkey Sanctuary www.nerjadonkeysanctuary.com (664 558 133) is a charity that has as its goal the protection, care and rescue of donkeys, horses, mules and other animals in danger of exclusion or abandonment.

Nerja Donkey Sanctuary started in 2004, and, since then, it has rescued hundreds of animals, many of them have had the later opportunity of being moved to a new safe home. This association, moreover, takes in all kinds of barnyard animals, like goats, pigs, hens, turkeys or sheep that have had neither a fair nor pleasant life (because of ill-treatment, hit and runs, etc.). In the sanctuary facilities, these animals are given a daily care, as well as the veterinary attention they need.

The Donkey Sanctuary does not receive any public subsidies, and that is the reason why private companies and people’s contributions are very important for it. Escuela de Idiomas Nerja, for instance, collaborates with this organisation sponsoring a donkey called Platero. All the school’s donations are set to the protection and welfare of this donkey, of which everybody in the school is fond.

Everyone who likes can visit the Sanctuary for free and feed these animals. It is one of the favourite experiences for the School’s students, who appreciate it because they are aware of the need for protection of vulnerable animals. The charitable centre is located just one kilometre away from the downtown and it is open every day from 10 am to 2 pm and from 5 pm to 6 pm.
